Tips on Packing Up Your Kitchen Before a Remodel

Once you’ve hired a contractor, signed the contract and finalized your kitchen remodeling plans, all you need to do now is prepare for the start date. In today’s post, the local kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Hollywood share tips on how to organize and prepare for an upcoming kitchen remodel.

Prepare Packing Supplies

You’re not moving, but preparing for a remodel does mean you have to get everything out of the way. Packing supplies that are ideal for this purpose include cardboard boxes, reusable storage bins, packing tape, large storage bags and markers for labeling the containers. You’ll also need to cushion breakable items like dinner plates with old newspapers or packing paper.

Set Aside Items You Use Everyday

Before you start packing, set aside items that you use everyday: the coffeemaker, plates, bowls, utensils and cups. A slow cooker or rice cooker could be very useful as you probably won’t be able to use your stovetop while kitchen renovation is ongoing. Set aside food storage containers, foil and plastic wrap for leftovers. You might not be able to use your dishwasher, so have dishwashing and cleaning supplies on hand.

Declutter Your Kitchen

Packing your kitchen items is an opportunity to declutter. Set aside things that you don’t use anymore, from obsolete tools and appliances to decor and knick-knacks, and sell them online or put them up for donation.

Pack in Categories

Don’t pack everything in one large box, particularly supplies and items you’ll be using while remodeling is underway. Pack them in categories using shallow, stackable boxes; they’ll be easier to retrieve and organize. Clearly mark all sides of the box to avoid having to open each box when you’re looking for something. Packing your things in categories also helps you pre-sort your things when you start moving them into your new kitchen.

Cover Electronics

Remodeling produces a lot of dust, which may spread to adjacent rooms. Cover all electronics in these rooms when not in use. Also, your HVAC system will be capturing a lot of dust and other particulates, so make sure you inspect the air filters before and after remodeling begins, and replace them if clogged.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

You won’t be using your kitchen throughout the remodel, so you need to set up a makeshift one in the meantime. Set up a table in the garage or another space and devote space to prep, wash and dining areas. Non-gas-powered cooking implements like an electric grill will be useful while you don’t have access to the kitchen itself.
