A Guide to Bathroom Fixture Finishes

The right bathroom fixtures can make the difference between gorgeous and blah. This is why choosing the right fixture finish deserves as much consideration as other aspects of bathroom design. If you’re not familiar with the various types of bathroom finishes, read on as the bathroom contractors at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Hollywood share a quick guide.

Chrome

Chrome is the most popular bathroom fixture finish because it works well with all home styles. Every bathroom fixture manufacturer offers virtually every fixture in a chrome finish. While it is easy to maintain, note that it shows water spots and fingerprints easily, both of which can be prevented by wiping clean after use or by using household cleaning products.

Brushed Nickel

Like chrome, brushed nickel looks great with any home style, and is easy to clean and maintain. If you prefer something more muted than chrome, brushed nickel is a good alternative. Note that brushed nickel looks different than stainless steel, so if the latter is a prevalent element of your bathroom remodeling design, you may want to consider a different finish for your fixtures.

Polished Nickel

Polished nickel is a good alternative to chrome if you’re looking for something more muted yet shiny. Similar to brushed nickel, it is hard to get a precise match with other finishes. Other hardware will need to have a polished nickel finish, or check out other options before circling back to this.

Oil-Rubbed Bronze

Oil-rubbed bronze creates an elegant look that’s perfectly suited to traditional homes, particularly those that feature stained wood panels. It gained popularity in the late 1990s and remains one of the best-known options available today. Pairing it with the right style and color palette can take some work, but a skilled interior designer or contractor can help. If you are worried about water stains, oil-rubbed bronze is a great option.

Satin Bronze

Satin bronze is typically seen in Mediterranean-style bathrooms. It has a lighter and more even tone than oil-rubbed bronze, and works in both modern and traditional home styles.

Polished Brass

Many people associate polished brass with vintage bathroom designs: think clawfoot bathtubs, ornate vanities and subway tiles. Polished brass is generally more expensive than other options, but it’s far more durable than most finishes, and is easy to match with most home styles.

Satin Brass

Satin brass is a semi-matte brass finish that offers all the features of polished brass but works perfectly with traditional, modern and contemporary home styles. It also resists fingerprints and water spotting. Not all manufacturers offer this finish and it may take some effort to find.

Copper

Copper, as a building material, is probably best known for its use in high-end gutters and roofing. Copper fixtures are associated with home styles such as Farmhouse, and are manufactured and installed without protective coatings. When it oxidizes, it forms a layer of green patina. Some people find aesthetic value in the patina, but it can be easily cleaned off if you want your copper fixtures bare. Copper has a natural antibacterial surface and does not corrode.
