Creating a Kitchen Layout: Do’s & Don’ts

Your kitchen is more than just a place where you whip up meals. It’s where you make memories with your family and friends. You’ll have an even more enjoyable time if it has a well-designed layout! If there are issues with the placement of things in the room, a kitchen remodel can help address them.

Read on to find out things you should do and what to avoid when designing the layout in your kitchen.

Do’s

Plan for Good Workflow

Cooking is a breeze with good kitchen workflow. Take your time to determine how you will use each area of the room. You can further improve your kitchen’s functionality by adding more storage near each workstation. For instance, add more drawers for tools and pans near the cooking area.

Make Sure Walkways Are Wide Enough

Keep your spaces from getting cramped by ensuring walkways are wide enough. Kitchen renovation experts suggest having at least four feet of distance between countertops. It’s also a good way to ensure that opening your refrigerator, dishwasher and other large appliances doesn’t interfere with foot traffic.

Measure Your Appliances

Always check the measurements of appliances before purchasing them. It will help to choose appliances even before the actual construction starts to make sure they fit your kitchen.

Don’ts

Installing an Island in a Small Kitchen

Before adding an island to your layout, make sure you have enough space for one. There should be around 40 inches of space on both sides of the island for efficient traffic flow. The ideal size of the island depends on how you will use it. If you are adding a sink, it should be at least 47 inches wide; if not, it can be as narrow as 24 inches wide.

Improper Lighting Design

Good lighting is essential to your kitchen’s safety, functionality and comfort. When standing at the island, you want to place lights slightly in front of you instead of directly over or behind you. It is easier to adjust lighting levels by installing sconces, pendants and downlights. Your bulbs should also produce enough light that you can see comfortably while prepping and cooking.
