A Guide to Basic Interior Design Principles

There are no specific rules to follow in interior design. However, your home remodeler will encourage you to consider a few tips for a more harmonious and coherent style. You want your room to be well-designed and feel right. To achieve that effect in your home, you need to learn some basic principles of interior design.

As one of the leading remodeling companies in the state, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of West Collin County discusses interior design principles in today’s blog.

The Principles

Balance

Balance is the equal distribution of visual weight in a room. Remember these three types of balance when designing your interior: symmetrical, asymmetrical and radial. Symmetrical balance is created when the space is split into two sides that mirror each other, while asymmetrical balance is achieved without exact duplication. Radial balance, on the other hand, can be incorporated with a central focal point with other elements radiating from it.

Emphasis

Emphasis is established with your focal point. One of the biggest things you should avoid in your interior design is a sense of boredom. Balance is an important principle, but a room where everything gets equal importance can be monotonous. Therefore, you need to choose a focal point that draws attention and encourages the viewer to look around. A fireplace or a picture window is a great example of a room’s focal point.

Rhythm

In interior design, rhythm is visual pattern repetition. It’s the continuous organized movement that makes your eye travel around the room. One way to do this is by using the same color or shape at different intervals. To achieve rhythm, you need to think about repetition, progression, transition and contrast. A home renovator will incorporate these mechanisms to help the viewer’s eye move from one design element to another.

Scale & Proportion

Scale and proportion both relate to size and shape. Scale is how the size of one object compares to another, while proportion is the ratio between the size of one part to another. Some proportional relationships may be aesthetically pleasing, while others may not.

Unity & Harmony

Unity and harmony are achieved in your interior design when you incorporate all the principles to create a coherent message. They must work together and complement each other to strengthen the overall composition. One way you can do this is by creating a color scheme. The color palette of your interior should create an overall sense of restfulness and serenity.
