A pantry is the kitchen feature that is often wanted by buyers in the market for a new home. Even a relatively small kitchen needs to have a designated space to store groceries so that the room remains clean and organized. A well-designed pantry will provide better and more convenient storage than a large-sized pantry. To help you design the perfect storage space for your kitchen, interior remodeling company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen shares a few rules you may want to follow.
1. The shelves should not be too deep.
In a pantry, the standard depth of most racks or shelves is 16-20 inches. The highest shelf should be shallow enough to make items such as plates, bowls and glasses sitting on top easy to access (approximately 12 inches). If you think that stuff seems to get pushed out of the way to the point that it is forgotten about, you should definitely consider installing shallower shelves.
2. You need adequate floor space.
The bottom shelf is typically 20-24 inches from the floor. If you need to raise it even higher so that small children cannot reach it, do it. This will give you more room to stow other bulky items like pet food, paper towels and even crates.
3. Pay attention to a few key shelves.
The shelves that are easiest to access in a kitchen pantry are the shelves between waist and eye level. It makes sense to store your most-utilized items in this section. If you have decided to use a couple of bins or organizers, these are the shelves to place them on. This will allow members of your family to put things back in the same area they found them, instead of just returning them toward the front of a shelf.
4. Do not hesitate to rearrange.
You will need to visit your pantry periodically, whether you are stocking fresh groceries from the store or taking out food to replenish your fridge or add to the table. It is important to rotate the snacks and drinks cached away in your pantry to ensure freshness.
