What Kind of Homeowner-Remodeler Are You?

When it comes to home and interior remodeling, there are a lot of things that a homeowner has to consider during the process, and there are many approaches. In this post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of West Collin County discusses three kinds of homeowner-remodelers. You just might find yourself relating to one of them!

The Micromanager

Micromanagers get a bad reputation for being too manipulative and hands-on with a project. However, they are very focused on hitting goals and deadlines, and this tendency can be turned into an advantage. If you lean toward this management style, be sure to know your boundaries — being too involved or too demanding can demotivate the people working on the project. After all, the reason you’re hiring a contractor is to work with a team that is qualified to make your vision a reality.

The Manager

Even if you’re not that knowledgeable about home remodeling, you’re already the manager of your own remodeling project. When it comes to the style and design of the project, this is the time you’ll be most heavily involved. However, you shouldn’t confuse this role with that of a project manager, the person responsible for handling the construction and contractors involved in the project. A manager helps keep the project on track by being present whenever decisions have to be made. Of course, transparent communication and quality control also contribute to the success of the project.

The Hands-Off Homeowner

A hands-off homeowner-remodeler puts full trust in their contractor. This is in stark contrast to the previous two types of managers. Hands-off is a good approach if you’ve worked with the contractor before and you have confidence in the quality of work that they can produce. However, this could mean trouble if you’re working with a new or inexperienced contractor as they could overlook the quality control aspect of the project and just focus on getting the job done. To prevent this from happening, you need to be involved to some degree to ensure that you’re on track for success.
