Family Gatherings

Project Name
Family Gatherings
Project Summary
For this busy family, spaces for all to gather is a must. In the kitchen, a large island works well at meal time, homework time, and just fun conversation time. For them, a cozy, warm, stylish, and slight modern farmhouse vibe pretty much sums up their desires. In contrast, the existing kitchen space screamed ultra funky, late night dinner party and drinks for all.
Project Story
These homeowners had a busy lifestyle and three children, and they wanted a large, stylish kitchen area to accommodate their needs. Because the existing space was not so old but rather a bit dated and a drastically different style than what they desired, this project was considered a kitchen update with most cabinets, appliances, and utilities staying in place, The transformation, however, represents a major kitchen renovation. The original kitchen was nicely done about 13 years ago, with the style carried out well, but the double island and quirky style were quite opposite of the family’s lifestyle. The adjoining living space was a more accurate reflection of their tastes - shiplap, whites, grays, blues, lanterns and lamps. The vision for the kitchen was to match this living area and provide functional and practical updates while incorporating a stylish and slight modern design. The first major update on the homeowners’ list was changing the two islands in the previous design to one large island with plenty of seating for the family to gather around. The new island provides storage as well as a second oven and microwave on the kitchen side, with a large seating area on the living room side for homework to be done and for a fun gathering place. The owners also wanted white-painted upper cabinets with contrasting naval blue lower cabinets as well as butcher block countertops at the primary prep, cook, and clean-up zones. Both of these add to their modern version of farmhouse style while also providing great functional use. Other design elements include shiplap and contrasting black suede granite at the bar area, Cambria Swanbridge quartz on the island, white subway tile backsplash, and oversized black pendant lighting at the island.  We love this transitional style that keeps with the bones of the 1940’s home in a very classic, slightly farmhouse, beautiful way!
