Designing a Proper Bathroom Layout: The Do’s and Don’ts

Planning the layout is one of the things you need to focus on to ensure a successful bathroom remodel. Overlooking just one minor aspect may affect the other fundamental design elements, compromising your overall bathroom experience.

Trusted home remodel contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Rhode Island shares a few do’s and don’ts to keep in mind when designing a proper bathroom layout.

Bathroom Layout Dos and Don’ts

DO: Consider Your Current Infrastructure

It’s wise to discuss with your contractor how your current plumbing infrastructure can fit with the new bathroom layout. Unless you’re planning to redo your bathroom’s entire plumbing system, you should design your layout around the existing plumbing points. Keeping them intact may sometimes be the better option, but this will still depend on how you want to use your new bathroom.

DON’T: Confine Your Storage to One Area

When it comes to bathroom storage, one of the easiest and most convenient places is the vanity area. But it shouldn’t be the only place to store your bathroom essentials. In fact, you can utilize other areas in your bathroom. And when installing new cabinets and shelves, they don’t always have to be in the same area as your vanity. Placing them around your bathroom can make the space look more expansive. You can also discuss different storage options with your hired bathroom remodel contractor to decide what’s best for your space.

DO: Avoid Emptiness in Your Bathroom Space

If your bathroom space is bigger than normal, a simple layout with the vanity, tub, and shower might make the interiors look too big and empty. Consider adding design elements such as stud walls to separate your shower and vanity areas or create a double-entry shower layout if there is space. If you want to install a big tub, consider placing it more at the center of the space to serve as the room’s focal point. You can add a bench, side chair, antique cabinetry, or other furniture to fill any extra space.

DON’T: Ignore Natural Light

Adequate natural lighting in your home is not only good for your mindset and physical health. It can also make a room feel more inviting, relaxing, and functional. This can be applied in your bathroom, especially if you have tons of natural light from your existing windows. Consider positioning key pieces such as the sink, tub, or mirror near a window to make your daily bathroom routine feel more refreshing and uplifting. Doing this also helps reduce your dependency on artificial lighting during the day, which leads to lower energy consumption!
