Choosing the Perfect Interior Paint Colors for Your Home

Whether you are designing a new home or refurbishing your current space, adding fresh coats of paint to your interiors is one of the most cost-effective ways to achieve the look and feel you desire. To get you started, interior remodeling DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Rhode Island shares tips and tricks for finding the perfect interior paint colors for your home.

Think About the Mood You Want to Create

Because colors largely influence how a space feels, it is essential to choose the right shade of paint that pulls off the mood you want to achieve. If you want your space to feel intimate and cozy, clay beige and plum royale with gray undertones can give you just that. If you desire something moody and atmospheric, look for shades like navy blue or salamander green. White and soft pastels are soothing and cheerful, while vibrant colors are great at awakening spaces like family rooms and kitchens.

Consider the Lighting in the Room

Lighting dramatically affects how paint colors appear in a room. So before you settle on a color palette, make sure you get large paint samples and try them out on your walls or ceilings. Inspect these paint strips carefully at different times of the day to discover the effect changing light has on them. Lighter colors like cream and ice white do not absorb a lot of natural light, whereas darker colors like old navy and old black work in rooms that receive copious amounts of daylight. Gray is a popular choice for home remodel designers because it works in spaces with and without plenty of light.

Do Not Forget About the Finish or Sheen

Paint colors come in a range of finishes and sheens. Five main paint finishes are grouped by the degree of their shine. These are flat/matte, eggshell, satin, semi-gloss, and high-gloss. Each finish will look different on the surfaces inside your home. Flat or matte finishes are recommended for low-traffic areas, whereas semi-gloss finishes are great for high-traffic spaces like kitchens and bathrooms. Eggshell and satin finishes, on the other hand, can work just about anywhere.

Do Not Select the Paint Color First

When designing a room, paint color is ideally the last thing you should choose. Paint can be customized to coordinate with the furnishings in a room. Choose your furniture, flooring, and artwork first, then find a paint color that complements or contrasts those items.
