3 Things to Consider Before Replacing Your Bathtub

Stubborn stains, chipped edges, unsightly mold and outdated tub designs are all good reasons for a bathtub replacement. However, before replacing your tub, there are also other things you should consider.

1. Bathtub Size & Bathroom Floor Space

You need to make sure your bathroom has enough floor space to fit a standard wall-to-wall tub, which has a length of 60 inches, a width of 30 to 32 inches and a depth of 14 to 20 inches. A freestanding tub is also an option in some larger bathrooms.

2. Bathtub Type

Keep in mind that standard dimensions vary, depending on the type of bathtub. Here’s an overview of the most commonly used tub types and their corresponding dimensions:

  • Alcove tubs – There are several reasons why an alcove tub is the most popular type of bathtub among homeowners. They’re affordable, easy to install and compact enough to fit within a three-wall enclosure. (A standard alcove tub is 60 inches long, 30 inches wide and 16 inches deep.)
  • Freestanding tubs – Freestanding tubs are a smart choice in a bathroom renovation if you want a design focal point that draws attention. Keep in mind that this type of bathtub takes up a lot of space, with a standard freestanding tub measuring 60 inches long, 30 inches wide and 19 inches deep. There should be an extra three inches of space around the ends of the tub and four inches between its side and the wall as well.
  • Corner tubs – A corner tub can be an efficient solution for odd angles, dead space or an unused corner of a bathroom. This type of bathtub has a standard depth of 20 inches and is usually big enough for two to three people.

3. Bathtub Material

  • Fiberglass – Fiberglass tubs are affordable, lightweight and easy to install, but also prone to cracks and scratches.
  • Acrylic – Acrylic tubs are affordable and resistant to cracking and chipping, but the surface can be damaged by certain cleaners.
  • Porcelain – Porcelain tubs are known for their antique aesthetic. They’re also naturally scratch-resistant and easy to clean, but expensive and very heavy.
  • Marble – Marble tubs are on the pricey side but thanks to their classic aesthetic appeal and design versatility, they may be worth the extra cost.
