How to Be a Good Neighbor During a Remodel

Any renovation or remodel project will impact your life. Be it a kitchen remodel, bedroom renovation or room addition, it’s likely to improve your home’s comfort, functionality, efficiency and overall value. To get to that point, you will have to endure some minor inconveniences, and it’s not just you who will be affected by all the noise and dust—your neighbors will too. And unlike you, they won’t benefit from any of the work.

It’s important to build and maintain good relationships with your neighbors, regardless of who’s getting the work done. If you happen to be the one undergoing a remodel, here are some ways to make sure that neighbors will remain neighborly.

  1. Tell your neighbors about the remodel in advance.

It’s best to tell your neighbors about an upcoming renovation so they will know to prepare for it as well. Let them know when the project will start and what they should expect. Will there be a lot of noise? Will local traffic flow be affected? This way, there are no surprises.

  1. Consider your neighbors’ schedules.

One way to cause as little disruption as possible is to make sure the contractors work during normal business hours, when your neighbors are at work and school. Ask your neighbors about their usual routines too, so workers won’t wake them too early in the morning.

  1. Don’t block other driveways.

Make sure that your contractor’s vehicles are not parked in front of neighboring driveways. They also should not park in neighbors’ parking areas if you have street parking in your area.

  1. Be open to concerns.

While the project is ongoing, be sure to talk to your neighbors and ask if they are being inconvenienced in any way.
