Tips on Remodeling Your Living Room

The living room is probably one of the first things that you think of changing during a home remodeling project. A good living room remodeling plan should improve both aesthetics and function, while making the most out of your living room space. In today’s post, local remodeling contractor DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Southern Lakes has remodeling tips for this room.

Use a Neutral Color Palette

Many people dismiss neutral colors as being too plain. However, a neutral color scheme that features beige, ivory, black, gray or various shades of white are like a blank canvas. They let you add bold elements to your living room that you can change around without having to repaint or renovate. A neutral color palette is also style-neutral, which means it works for every interior design style.

Create a Focal Point

A focal point draws the viewer’s eyes and sometimes defines the purpose of a room. For example, if your living room doubles as your media center, then the focal point will be your television. Everything else follows: you arrange seating around it, you choose window treatments that can be closed to reduce glare, you plan where it’s mounted so that the wires are hidden.

Here’s another example: a beautiful view right outside the living room. Once you have decided to make it your focal point, you choose windows that “frame” the view. You arrange furniture pieces so they don’t obscure the windows. You design living room storage with your closet remodeling contractor in such a way that it doesn’t distract from the windows. Whatever focal point you choose, it will give you the direction that you need for your living room remodel.

Consider the Flooring

The living room floor is a large design area that can bring together disparate design elements. Carefully weigh the pros and cons of various flooring materials against your living room requirements. Carpet is affordable and easy to replace, but does not suit all styles. Hardwood floors are durable and great for living rooms with high foot traffic, but do not always work with contemporary designs.

Improve the Lighting

Living room lighting does more than just provide illumination; it can set the mood and highlight attractive features of your home. Smart lighting systems can be set so they dim when you’re watching a movie, create a relaxing ambience for family gatherings or turn on in certain areas when you want to read.
