Tips for Choosing a Kitchen Backsplash

Adding a backsplash is one of the simplest ways to upgrade the look of your kitchen. Aside from protecting the wall behind your sinks and counters, it can also add more style and beauty to your space. Today, our home remodeling expert gives tips on choosing the perfect backsplash for your kitchen.

Material Options

  • Ceramic or Porcelain – Ceramic and porcelain tile offers excellent water resistance and can look like tile or natural stone.
  • Glass Tile – If you want your kitchen to be more sophisticated, go for a glass tile backsplash. Its reflective surface will make your space brighter and you never have to seal glass since it’s naturally non-porous. However, the grout between tiles should be sealed to avoid stains.
  • Metal – Small metal tiles have recently become popular. They come in various textures and finishes. While this material looks appealing, it tends to get scratches that can’t be sanded out.
  • Stone Veneer – When you choose stone veneer for your kitchen remodeling project, you can achieve the luxurious look of real stone without worrying about maintenance. It’s easier to care for than natural stone since it doesn’t hold onto dirt or grime.

Choosing Colors

It’s important to match the color and pattern of your backsplash with your countertop. If you prefer a cooler feel in your kitchen, go for colors like blue, green and purple. For a warmer vibe, choose colors like red, yellow and orange. Earth tones can make your kitchen look and feel calmer. These colors include gray, black, white, brown and tan.

Back in the day, people tended to outline their tiles. Today, the color of the grout is usually similar to the color of the backsplash. Still, if you want the backsplash to be the focal point of your kitchen, you can opt for color contrast.

Other Things to Consider

Extend the backsplash tiling around the room for a contemporary look. It can also help in making a small kitchen look bigger. Keep in mind that tile materials vary in sealing needs. Granite, marble and slate require resealing once a year. Also, you should invest in high-quality grout because it’s the backbone of your backsplash.
