All About Wet Rooms, Part 1: What They Are & Their Benefits

A wet room can bring several benefits to your day-to-day life at home. If you or a family member struggles with mobility, removing the need to step over the bath or into a shower enclosure will allow them to spend time in this private oasis safely and conveniently.

In this article, our home remodel specialists discuss what exactly a wet room is and some of the advantages that come with this addition.

What Is a Wet Room?

A wet room is a completely waterproofed bathroom with a shower area flush with the rest of the floor. The water drains into a flush drain located within the shower section of the room. There is no risk of water damage because the floor and walls are fully sealed with a waterproof membrane.

Since the floor of the shower area is at the same level as the rest of the room, a wet room is a perfect choice for those with mobility issues. It is also an effective way of utilizing space and can be built on both the ground floor and upper floors of your home.

Is There a Difference Between a Wet Room and a Shower Room?

Unlike a traditional shower enclosure, a wet room and a shower room do not include a door. Instead, these rooms use a glass panel partition for the rest of the space.

So what is the main difference between a wet room and a shower room? According to a bathroom renovation expert, a wet room is an open-plan space with the floor modified so that the water will drain into a drainage unit in the shower area, whereas a shower room or a walk-in shower can feature a low-profile tray and one or two glass screens to minimize the drizzle of water onto the rest of the space.

What Are the Advantages of a Wet Room?

  • It is easier to clean. Cleaning and maintaining a wet room is easier because of its minimal lines. Meanwhile, a traditional bathroom with all the fixtures and fittings inside will bring its cleaning issues.
  • It creates a stylish design. In this day and age, the demand for open-plan layouts is more prevalent than ever. Many homeowners are opting for the inclusion of stylish and modern wet rooms in their homes.
  • It works in small bathrooms. Because a wet room features a minimalist design, it creates an illusion of a bigger and brighter space.
