Why Document Your Home Renovation?

It is always a good idea to document the upgrades and renovations you make to your home. Who doesn’t love a good “before” and “after” photo comparison? Friends and family will appreciate photos while they admire your new space and the progress you’ve made on your home. Should you decide to sell, photos could even help sell the home for a higher price.

During your renovation, everything will seem “in progress” and not fully finished, but it is important to take pictures regardless. Here are six reasons to take photos during a renovation.

1. Know what’s underneath. What contractors find during a remodeling project may surprise you. For example, previous owners may have layered new carpet on top of beautiful hardwood flooring. You may not want that material exposed now, but it could appeal to potential purchasers when you sell your home.

2. Get help with future projects. A contractor might use images obtained during renovations to update designs. Photos might also show hidden pipes and electrical wiring behind walls. You or future owners may need or want more adjustments. Take images of exposed pipes, cables and other elements so future contractors know what to expect.

3. Recall who did what. Having a general “home remodeler near me”, a plumber, an electrician and others working on a project gets complicated. Knowing what each company did and where they did it can help you to determine who is at fault if a problem arises, avoiding situations where contractors blame each other for an issue.

4. Impress potential buyers. In the future, you want potential buyers to see your home as a sound investment. Renovation photos can generate a great impression and convince buyers that you spent a lot of money upgrading your home. You may be able to sell your property for more and recoup a bigger portion of your investment.

5. Capture the details. Imagine going back in six months to make further changes. It’s easier to plan ahead when everything is photographed. This can save you a lot of time and money!
