A Checklist to Creating an Accessible Home

A mobility remodeling project can benefit you and your family in many ways. Whether you are remodeling your home to meet your changing needs or you want to ensure a comfortable environment for a family member that may have mobility challenges, this checklist from DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Reno can help you.

The Bathroom

For bathrooms, these changes are generally the most important:

  • Grab bars should be installed in showers and bathtubs.
  • Switch to handheld showerheads and non-slip flooring and seats.
  • Relocate the switches to a more accessible height so that even someone who is in a seated position can reach them.

The Kitchen

These features are essential in making your kitchen accessible, so make sure they are included in the kitchen quote you’ll receive:

  • It’s better to get sinks that aren’t as deep as the standard sinks. Ideally, you should have the appropriate sink depth measured if you or a family member is in a wheelchair.
  • Faucets with extended handles and spouts are generally easier to use with just one hand. These are recommended for people with limited arm or hand strength or those without use of their hands. Alternatively, you might want to invest in faucets with electronic sensors so that water will automatically turn on and off as needed.
  • The aisles in your kitchen should be wide enough to accommodate wheelchairs and walkers.

The Exterior

Pay special attention to your home exterior too. This way, even those with limited mobility will have no issues entering or leaving the main home. Below are some of the details that you should check when planning for your exterior:

  • At least one of the entry doors should be wide enough to accommodate someone in a wheelchair or walker.
  • Install a ramp with guardrails on both sides to make it easier for people in a wheelchair to access your home.
  • Opt for rough surfaces in order to prevent slipping.
  • Driveways and walkways should have enough space to allow car doors and sliding doors on passenger vans to be fully opened and for wheelchairs to be maneuvered easily.
