How to Display Art at Home

Art is an undeniable part of the home remodeling landscape. Without it, spaces would feel bare and boring. However, simply hanging a painting on a wall is not the only way to display art and make an interior more appealing. Here are some tips on displaying your favorite pieces.

Use Art to Create a View

A window behind a sink in the kitchen is a staple of home design, but what if there’s nothing but a blank wall and no window? Simply hang one large or several paintings where a window should be. An oil painting of a seascape or landscape is a great option for creating that view.

Lean, Don’t Hang

You don’t even have to hang artwork; you can lean it against the wall for that highly organic look. It’s a casual way to display art and the perfect solution if you live in an apartment or condo where drilling a hole in the wall might not be allowed. It’s also easier to find a place to lean artwork, whether you’re working on a kitchen or a home office remodel.

Use Art Instead of Painting a Wall

In many homes, using one wall as the focal point typically involves painting it a different color from the rest of the walls in the room. While an accent wall is good, it’s not your only option. Instead of painting the wall, hang several works of art that automatically draw the eye.

Draw Attention to Furniture

Create a vignette by leaning a painting against the wall as the painting sits atop a piece of good furniture. This is a perfect way to draw attention to the furniture if you want it to be the focal point of the room. This works great if you’re especially fond of an antique piece.

Cover an Entire Wall

A boring hallway or upper floor walkway can come to life if you cover an entire wall with art. You can commission a local artist to use the wall itself as the canvas, but you can also cover most of the wall with a large painting by your favorite artist.

Don’t Stick to the Grid

Paintings positioned neatly on a wall are common and expected. The best way to make them more interesting is to forget about the grid completely. Hang frames of different sizes without any obvious pattern. This works well not just with art but with pictures of your family. To do this, start at the center and move outward as you add more frames.

Don’t Stick to Paintings

Not every work of art is a framed picture or a painting. Some art pieces have more texture and patina, i.e. a piece of driftwood or a sculpted piece of iron. You can also find textured mixed media pieces for an instant conversation starter.
