The Do’s & Don’ts of Designing a Kitchen Layout

One thing is for sure when you are planning a kitchen remodel — you need to make a lot of decisions. You’ll need to decide which contractor to hire and what materials to use, determine which colors work with your space, and much more. Understandably, this stage of your project can get intimidating. However, it shouldn’t be the case if you carefully prepare for your remodel.

Read on to learn what you should and shouldn’t do when designing your kitchen layout!

Helpful Tips

Ensure Walkways Are Wide Enough

There must be sufficient space between your kitchen island and cabinets. Walkways in your kitchen should be at least 36 inches wide. Meanwhile, paths in the cooking area should be at least 42 inches wide for a single-cook configuration. If two people in the family cook, this space should be 48 inches wide or more.

Proper Placement Is Essential

When it comes to storage and appliance placement in your kitchen, consider tasks you tend to do a lot. It will be more convenient to have items necessary to perform a task nearby. For instance, your knives and cutting boards should be close to your prepping area. At your cooking station, pots and pans should be easy to reach.

Plan the Traffic Flow

Regardless of what type of home remodel you are working on, you should carefully plan the traffic flow. Doing so will keep people from bumping into each other. If you have sufficient space for an island, adding one will help regulate traffic flow.

Decide on the Sink’s Location First

Often, experts design the kitchen layout based on the placement of the sink. You use your sink area the most in this room. That said, consider placing your sink where there is a window that offers a nice view. Another ideal place for a sink is on a kitchen island.

Measure Your Appliances

Always check the measurements of appliances before purchasing them. It will save you from having a refrigerator or dishwasher that’s too large for your kitchen. You’ll also avoid issues with cabinets not opening properly because of an oversized appliance.
