How to Avoid Sticker Shock When Renovating Your Kitchen

Remodeling your kitchen is one of the most exciting home improvement projects you can undertake. The thing that most homeowners tend to dread is, of course, the cost. In the United States, the average kitchen remodel costs about $50,000; however, you should not let this figure discourage you. With careful planning and a few creative decisions, you can get the kitchen of your dreams without going over the original kitchen quote from your contractor. Here’s how.

Work Closely With Your Designer

During the initial planning stages as well as throughout the entire project, be sure that you work closely with your designer. Try to pick an overall theme — modern, rustic, eclectic, etc. — and stick with it. As much as possible, keep the original layout of your kitchen since moving your plumbing and electrical systems can cost major bucks. It is also a good idea to go window shopping with your designer or contractor so that you get a realistic sense of how much kitchen appliances and finishes actually cost.

Make Your Plans Early & Stick to Them

A good way to go over your kitchen estimate is to not stick to your original plan. We find that the majority of the cases where people go over their budget is due to selecting products and finishes that were not in the original plan. Do your research early in the planning phase and select products well in advance. More importantly, try your absolute best to stick to those selections to avoid spending more than you originally intended.

Consider Mid-Grade Appliances

If the budget is a bit tight, there is really no reason to go for high-end appliances and fixtures. You can still have a beautiful and functional kitchen that is the stuff of dreams even without a top-of-the-line fridge or stove. Also, try to keep an eye out for sales to get the best deals possible. Make contact with several salespeople from different appliance stores and exchange contact information. Most of them will be more than happy to give you a text or call if they have a big sale coming up. Most stores will also be more than happy to hold your appliances for weeks or even months until you’re ready to have them delivered.
