The Pros & Cons of Open Floor Plans

If you’re in the market for a new home or are thinking about building one from the ground up, then you’ve probably heard the term “open floor plan” from your home remodeler or realtor. As the name suggests, an open floor plan is one where multiple spaces flow naturally into each other instead of being walled off.

Open floor plans are a recent architectural trend, having gained popularity in the 1990s. They are used in both residential and commercial spaces and are especially popular in remodeling projects for older homes.

The Pros

There are many good reasons to purchase a home with an open floor plan or to convert your existing space. For one, open floor plans tend to let in plenty of natural light. With fewer walls blocking off windows, light can reach more areas in your space, making it appear larger. If you own a small home, an open floor plan is something that your home renovator might suggest.

In an office setting, open floor plans promote collaboration and teamwork. This is why you often see them in modern workplaces. Finally, open floor plans are a lifesaver if you have children. It gives your little ones more space to run around and you can easily keep an eye on them since there are no walls to block your view.

The Cons

On the other hand, open floor plans are not for everyone. The main problem some people have with an open layout is that it can lead to less privacy. If you are working from home and need a quiet space to concentrate, the noise that your children are making just a few steps over can be distracting.

Another disadvantage of open floor plans is that they are generally more expensive to heat and cool than homes with closed-off rooms. This is because walled-off rooms more easily trap cooled or heated air, and you can confine the air to the rooms you are occupying. When your entire home is open, it may cost more to keep your entire home at a comfortable temperature.
