All About Defining a Room’s Focal Point

Have you ever entered a home for the first time and immediately noticed the classy chandelier hanging from the ceiling, or the massive flat TV suspended on the wall? Interior designers and home remodeling contractors call it the focal point of a room. It is that part of a space that immediately draws attention.

How to Define the Focal Point of a Room

If you’re in the process of remodeling or if you simply want to redecorate, start by defining the focal point that makes a room more interesting. Here are some of the pointers you should remember:

  • Make sure it’s the first thing you see when you enter the room.
  • Find the “biggest” feature, the one which is more dramatic than the rest of the room.
  • A focal point should be interesting, so it should pop with its color, texture or visual appeal.
  • Illuminate the focal point, either with natural or artificial lighting.
  • The use of contrast can make a focal point stand out.

There Are No Hard & Fast Rules

You don’t have to focus on one part of the room during a home remodeling job. Generally, if the room is rather small, a maximum of two focal points should be enough, but there is no rule that makes this your only choice.

For example, a room with a high ceiling and a grand chandelier can have those features as its focal point. However, if there is a beautiful fireplace, a grand piano and a breathtaking view on the other side of a massive picture window, all of them can share top billing. What matters is that they all work together to make the room beautiful and welcoming.

Dominance

If you’ve decided to have multiple focal points in one room, consider assigning one focal point as the dominant one. The dominant focal point enables the eye to start in the strongest spot before moving on to other interesting parts of the room. This prevents a “busy” room that lacks a unifying design.

One way to determine the dominant focal point is by deciding which is more functional. In a living room, for example, if the TV, books and other items are positioned on one wall, that automatically makes that side of the room the dominant focal point, even if there are some paintings hanging on the opposite wall. If you want the eye to focus on a painting, however, place that painting in a room where the other walls are not as functional.
