When to Choose a Freestanding Tub

Freestanding tubs are a great choice if you want the fixture to be a statement piece or if you’re thinking of giving your bathroom a more vintage look. There are so many choices when it comes to freestanding baths. They can be made of stone, metal or acrylic and come in styles ranging from clawfoot tubs to sleeker, more contemporary shapes. They can be installed flush on the floor or on a platform.

The downside of freestanding bathtubs is the space requirement. They can be a problem if you’re reconfiguring an already-tight bathroom. They also tend to be heavier than their built-in counterparts. Cost-wise, they’re more expensive in terms of both unit and installation costs.

When to Choose a Built-In Tub

If you need a space-saving tub for your bathroom renovation, then built-in or alcove bathtubs are the best choice for you. They can be installed between two walls or in corners and can even share a wall with a shower, making them ideal for small bathrooms. This also makes them a great choice if you tend to take more showers than baths or if the bathroom is shared by users with different bathing preferences.

That being said, built-in tubs have their drawbacks. Placement options are limited compared to freestanding tubs because of how they are installed. There also aren’t as many style options, but this can be made up for by customizing the surround. Perhaps the biggest drawback of built-ins is that they can be harder to clean and maintain, especially if installed as a shower and tub combo.
