FixIt Files: The Lights of Christmas – Safe, Bright & Beautiful

The Tradition of Christmas Lights

From twinkling rooftops to glowing trees, holiday lights remind us of joy, hope, and faith — the heart of the season. For generations, families have gathered to hang lights, sip cocoa, and admire the glow that brings warmth to cold winter nights. Those twinkling strands don’t just decorate our homes — they celebrate, Jesus Christ, the light of Christmas itself, a reminder of love, faith, and togetherness.

But before you climb the ladder or plug in that first strand, take a few moments to make sure your holiday sparkle stays safe and stress-free.

💡 Holiday Lighting Safety Checklist

  1. Inspect Before You Connect

Before you hang a single strand, inspect every cord:

  • Look for cracked wires, broken bulbs, or loose sockets.
  • Check the label — make sure your lights are rated for outdoor use if they’re going outside.
  • Replace any frayed cords or old lights that flicker unpredictably.

DreamMaker Tip: LED lights not only use less energy, they also stay cooler and are safer to use outdoors.

  1. Use the Right Tools (and Ladder!)

Nothing ruins the holiday spirit faster than a slip or fall. It is easy to get caught up in the moment and prop up a ladder and “just get it done.” Take a few minutes and stay safe.

  • Always set your ladder on solid, level ground.
  • Keep three points of contact while climbing.
  • Don’t stretch or lean — move the ladder instead.
  • Enlist a friend or family member to hold the ladder and spot you.
  1. Mind the Weather

Wet cords and snow-covered outlets can cause serious hazards.

  • Only plug into GFCI outlets outdoors.
  • Use weatherproof extension cords and connections.
  • Turn off outdoor lights during heavy snow or rain.
  1. When to Call a Professional

If you’re hanging lights along a steep roofline, high trees, or second-story gutters, it might be time to call in the pros. They have the right equipment and safety gear to keep your display beautiful—and keep you on the ground supervising and safe.

🌟 Why It Matters

The beauty of Christmas lights is timeless. When you take a few extra steps for safety, you’re not just protecting your home—you’re protecting the joy and traditions that make this season so special.

From all of us at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of the Pikes Peak Region, we wish you a safe, peaceful, and joy-filled Christmas surrounded by the ones you love.
