FixIt Files: Time for a Home Safety Check: Test those Smoke & CO Alarms

September days may still be sunny and warm but cooler days are on the way. It will be time to switch from the air conditioning to the heater before we know it. Fall means more time indoors, cozy fires, and cranking up the heat—but it also means potential fire and carbon monoxide risks. A quick test and battery change could literally save lives. This is one of the easiest and most important home maintenance tasks you can do!

 How to Test & Maintain

  1. Press the “Test” Button – You should hear a loud beep. If not? Time for fresh batteries.
  2. Replace Batteries – Use high-quality AA or 9V batteries—do this twice a year (set a reminder!).
  3. Check Expiration Date – Most detectors last 7–10 years. If yours is older, replace it.
  4. Dust the Vents – Use a soft brush or vacuum attachment to remove cobwebs and dust buildup.
  5. Check Placement – Smoke detectors should be on every level of your home, and near bedrooms. CO detectors should be near sleeping areas and gas appliances.

 Tools You’ll Need

  • Step stool or ladder
  •  Fresh batteries
  • Microfiber cloth or vacuum with brush tool
  • A flashlight to check labels and expiration dates
