FixIt Files: Wrapping Up the Season with Care

As the glow of Christmas fades and a new year peeks around the corner, it’s time to gently tuck away the treasures of the season — the lights, the ornaments, the wreaths, and all the sparkle that made your home feel so Christmasy.

With a little organization now, next December will start off merry and bright — without the tangled lights and mystery ornament boxes!

1. Sort Before You Store

Before you start boxing things up, take a few moments to go through your decorations:

  • Toss or donate anything broken, worn, or that no longer fits your holiday style.
  • Group items by theme, color, or room — next year, you’ll thank yourself when decorating goes twice as fast.
  • Keep sentimental pieces in their own small box or bin for extra care.

DreamMaker Tip: Snap a quick photo of how your favorite displays looked this year — it’s a helpful reference for next season’s setup!

2. Keep Lights Bright (and Untangled!)

Nothing tests holiday patience like a wad of knotted lights (bah-humbug). Before you stash them:

  • Wrap strands around a piece of cardboard or a plastic reel.
  • Label each set by location (“front porch,” “tree,” “mantel”) using masking tape or tags.
  • Check each strand for broken bulbs and replace them now so they’re ready to go next year.

Pro Tip: Store lights in a sealed bin to keep out moisture — no one wants rusty connections next December!

3. Protect Ornaments & Decor

Delicate ornaments, figurines, and wreaths deserve special care:

  • Use egg cartons or plastic cups inside boxes for fragile ornaments.
  • Wrap breakables in tissue paper or bubble wrap.
  • Hang wreaths on hooks inside a closet or place them in labeled garment bags.
  • Store wrapping paper upright in a tall bin or basket to prevent crushing.

 4. Label It, Stack It, and Smile

As you pack, label everything clearly — think “Tree Decorations,” “Outdoor Lights,” “Gift Wrap,” etc. Stack bins neatly in a cool, dry area where they’ll stay safe until next year.

Why It Matters

Taking the time to pack it up with care makes room for gratitude, reflection, and that peaceful sense of closure that helps you start the new year refreshed.

From all of us at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of the Pikes Peak Region, we wish you a blessed and beautiful start to the new year. May your home be filled with warmth, gratitude, and light — in every season.
