Tips on Planning the Perfect All-Season Outdoor Living Space

The general climate in Central Texas makes it possible to enjoy outdoor living for most of the year, and it would be a missed opportunity if you don’t try to make the most of this. In today’s post, local home renovator DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas shares tips on how to plan the perfect all-season outdoor living space.

Think About the Roof First

Your outdoor living space won’t be “all-season” if you can’t use it when it’s raining. Your first design consideration should be the roof that covers the living area. Roofing for outdoor living spaces can vary, from retractable patio covers to sheds made of glass, to those made of standard roofing materials like asphalt shingles and tile. Your designer or architect may also have input on how the roof should be designed, keeping in mind that it should also provide shade during sunny weather. Features such as gutters and insulation may also be needed, depending on the style that you ultimately choose.

Use Outdoor Elements That You Already Have

Take into account the things that you already have in your outdoor space. Do you have an existing deck or porch? A pool? An outdoor kitchen? Instead of designing an outdoor space from scratch, you and your home remodeler can instead incorporate these components into the design, perhaps improve upon them as you go along. New boards can be installed on an existing deck if the framing is in good condition. An outdoor kitchen may be improved upon with a new grill or a service counter.

Separate Your Living Spaces With Zones

Outdoor living spaces are for activities like backyard barbecues and pool parties, but they can be much more than that,  much like how the rooms in the house have varying purposes. Your outdoor living spaces can have a “zone” for entertaining guests, another for private relaxation, and yet another for activities with your kids.

It helps to think about your yard like you would an indoor space with an open floor plan. Even without walls separating, say, the kitchen from the living room, some cues help define each area — a change in elevation, color palette, or a physical divider. The same concept can be applied when defining “zones” in your outdoor living area: deck railings, a raised concrete platform, or some well-placed shrubbery can help define such spaces.
