How to Add Character to Your Kitchen

“Character” can be defined as qualities that are unique to a thing or an individual. In this context, a kitchen can be said to have character when it has qualities that reflect the homeowner’s taste and style. Simply put, these are qualities that make your kitchen less like a showroom exhibit and more “you”. In today’s post, local remodeling company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas shares insight on how to add character to your kitchen design, and how we can help you translate them toward a kitchen estimate

Why Should You Work With a Design-Build Remodeler?

A design-build remodeler is involved with the project from the very beginning. Engaging with such a remodeler during your project’s planning stages means working with the “you” parts of the design — your preferences and the “feel” that you want to achieve, to mention a few — can be incorporated into the design during the early stages, all the way to completion.

Our designers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen understand the importance of character in kitchen design. Anyone can copy someone else’s design from a magazine or photos found on the internet. Any remodeler can impose their style onto their designs. However, we at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen never lose sight of the fact that it’s your home — our job is to help you turn your vision into the best possible results.

Ways to Add Character to Your Kitchen

Before we draw a kitchen quote, we will sit down with you and talk about your kitchen remodeling goals, find out your preferences, and work out how they can be used to add character to your kitchen’s design. The following are some examples of how character can be added to kitchens:

  •   Get creative with the backsplash.  The backsplash is an underappreciated design element. But if you take a plain-looking kitchen and add a creative twist to just the backsplash, the entire kitchen changes immediately. The great thing about backsplashes is they lend themselves well to creative designs: mosaics, unusual tile patterns, vibrant colors — whatever suits your taste. The same concept can also be applied to flooring.
  •   Add some artwork.  Kitchens are regarded as a mostly-practical space, but there’s no reason why you shouldn’t spare a foot or two of wall space for a framed piece. Like a unique backsplash, artwork can add a focal point to your kitchen. You can choose virtually anything that reflects your style. It doesn’t have to be some rare or expensive piece — a well-chosen lithograph or one of your kids’ drawings will work just as well.
  •   Emphasize the island.  A lot of kitchen activities are centered on the island, making it a natural focal point. Painting it a different color from the surrounding cabinetry — the colors reflecting the “you” part of the design — can make it stand out.
