5 Ways to Make Your Ceilings Look Higher

High ceilings are highly appealing and can instantly make rooms look and feel larger. They let you install taller windows, allowing more natural light and fresh air indoors. It’s no wonder many people wish to have this architectural feature in their homes.

Does your humble abode have a standard ceiling height? A leading home renovator shares five easy ways to elongate a room.

What Can You Do to Make Your Ceilings Appear Higher?

1. Choose Low Furniture

Low-profile and horizontal furnishings expose more of the walls, diverting attention away from the ceiling. They can also open up your space. Choose pieces with minimal horizontal elements to accentuate the distance between them and the ceiling.

2. Paint Your Ceiling a Light Color

Painting your ceiling in a light color can make it seem higher than it actually is. Soft hues bounce off more light and can make rooms look larger. You can achieve the same effect by bringing the ceiling’s color a couple of inches down the wall. If you’re unsure which colors work best for your space, seek assistance from an experienced home remodeler

3. Use Vertical Elements

When placed right, mirrors work wonders in creating the illusion of space. Hang tall, slender mirrors or have them lean on the wall. Adding floor-to-ceiling bookshelves and tall potted plants can help maximize a room’s vertical space. Decorative items with vertical stripes or patterns, such as wall art and cushions, can also change the perceived height of your ceiling.

4. Hang Curtains Higher

Placing curtains near the ceiling can lengthen your space and make windows look bigger. If there aren’t a lot of patterns in the room, select a fabric with a vertical print. Doing so will further draw the eye upward.

5. Use Subtle Lighting Fixtures

Recessed lights will add a modern touch to your home and contribute to taller-looking ceilings. If adding a chandelier, look for a moderately-sized fixture that doesn’t have an eye-catching design or color and hang it a little higher. It’s a great idea to pair overhead lighting with wall sconces. They emit light upwards, making the ceiling look more elevated.
