Is a Galley Kitchen a Good Fit for Your Home?

While its name certainly evokes images of ships on the sea, a galley kitchen is about as far from a boat as one can get. Unfortunately, it’s this association that discourages many homeowners from choosing a galley kitchen for their home remodel, overshadowing the many benefits this type of layout can bring.

One of the things that seem to work against the galley kitchen is that, despite its advantages, it’s simply not right for all styles of homes. Our experienced experts at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Central Texas offer the following tips to help you make this important decision.

What Is a Galley Kitchen?

The most distinctive feature of a galley kitchen renovation is the long corridor that serves as the main kitchen walkway. This corridor is lined with base cabinets and large appliances are used to further define the layout. Compared to other types of kitchens, galley kitchens are smaller. This could be for two reasons: one, the space itself is small so a galley kitchen seemed like the natural choice; or two, galley kitchens are typically designed smaller than other types of layouts, whether or not the space is restrictive.

Should You Choose a Galley Kitchen?

Sizing can be a double-edged sword for galley kitchens. On the one hand, it can help you save space, allowing other rooms in your home to be bigger. On the other hand, a smaller kitchen can often be inefficient, especially if you cook a lot. Additionally, the size of a galley kitchen also means you’ll need less material for your countertops and cabinets, two of the biggest expenses in a kitchen remodel. You have to weigh these considerations before you decide on this type of layout.

Disadvantages of Galley Kitchens

Of course, the limited space galley kitchens offer allows very little flexibility in terms of appliance placement. If you have your heart set on an atypical sink layout, a galley kitchen remodel may not give you enough room to accommodate your design. It can also limit allowable sizes for appliances. This is not too much of a drawback because standard sizes are still viable for a galley kitchen. Still, if you want a bigger refrigerator, you might not find the space for it in this layout.

Don’t let its reputation discourage you from exploring the possibilities of a galley kitchen. It’s a functional design that, despite its limitations, can give you more space and budget for remodeling other parts of your home.
