A Homeowner’s Guide to Painting Home Interiors

It’s always a good idea to update your interior walls with a new coat of paint every few years to make sure your living spaces look their best. However, you may find it challenging to look for the best paint color that fits your home. To help you out, home remodel specialist DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Beaverton shares some interior paint color tips and tricks to consider.

Follow the Rule of Three

With so many paint colors available, choosing the perfect combination that will go well with your home interiors might be difficult. We suggest limiting your color palette to just three. Following the rule of three for your living spaces can look more cohesive and balanced. You can do this by using the 60-30-10 method. When decorating, try dividing the colors into components of 60 percent of a dominant color for the walls, 30 percent of a secondary color for the upholstery, and 10 percent of accent color for accessories.

Start From Dark to Light

Another foolproof way to make any space look good without much risk is to start decorating from dark to light vertically. This means using dark color shades for the floor, medium color shades for the walls, and light shades for the ceiling. With this trick, your interior space easily replicates the beauty of the outdoors. After all, the outside environment is typically darker below our feet, while trees and buildings have medium shades and skies and clouds are light.

Take Visual Cues From Your Own Style

Homeowners usually buy clothes in colors they like to wear and know they look good in them. Likewise, when choosing a paint color for your interior home renovation, consider dressing your rooms in colors that flatter you. If you like to wear plenty of denim, you may incorporate navy blue in your interior color palette. Meanwhile, if you like bright yellows and vibrant oranges, mixing citrusy accents is a fun solution.

Look Outside for Inspiration

These days, many people are interested in bringing the outdoors in. For this reason, you should try looking outside for color scheme inspirations. Perhaps forest green shades, sky blue hues, or earthy browns are speaking to you. No matter the color you choose, don’t forget to sample them at different times of the day and night as well as with the window treatments opened and closed. This way, you get the most realistic view of your potential choice.

Do Your Research Before Shopping

Before shopping for the best color for your home, it’s best to do your research first. Gather tips and ideas from catalogs, magazines, fabric swatches, and online blogs. Doing so will keep you from grabbing too many paint color options when shopping. The hardest part of choosing a paint color is having too many choices. Once you narrow down your favorite potential paint colors at home, you can go to the store for paint color samples to try at home.
