What to Consider When Choosing Cabinet Hardware

Choosing cabinet hardware may seem simple enough, but the choice you make can greatly affect your kitchen or bathroom’s overall appeal. So what exactly do you consider during the selection process? Bathroom and kitchen renovation expert DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Wilmington has some tips to share.

Cabinet Type

Generally, you must choose whether to get knob- or pull-type hardware. For ease of operation, knobs work well for cabinet doors while pulls suit drawers better. What you select will be guided by the style of cabinets you have.

On the other hand, there is the trend of using knobs regardless of the cabinets you have. This was mostly done with older kitchens, so you might want to consider it if you have a traditional kitchen design and you’re aiming for historical accuracy. If you have a very modern kitchen, going for all pulls is another trend at the opposite end of the spectrum.

Cabinet Design

Cabinets come with curved or squared lines. Whatever design your cabinets feature, choose hardware that matches them. For example, curved cabinet styles like pillow-top doors, ogee edges and raised panels are complemented by curved hardware with ornate detailing and soft edges. Squared cabinets, like flat panels or shaker cabinets, are complemented by hardware with square contours.

Hardware Finish

Popular options include chrome and brushed nickel, but other options are available if you’re looking to add interest to your bathroom or kitchen. Also, keep in mind that your choice of hardware finish doesn’t have to exactly match the room’s fixtures, but they should be complementary. For example, brushed nickel or stainless steel fixtures look good with black matte, bronze, satin brass and antique pewter hardware finishes.
