The Pros & Cons of Open Kitchens

Let’s talk open kitchens! At DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen, we get a lot of requests for open floor plans, especially when the client has a contemporary kitchen remodel in mind — although this layout is also becoming increasingly popular for more traditional kitchens.

The Pros & Cons of Open Kitchens

Truth be told, there is no right or wrong kitchen style, only what’s right for you. That said, let’s take an honest look at the different arguments for and against open kitchens.

Should You Choose an Open-Concept Kitchen?

Here are some of the things we love about open kitchen layouts:

  • They make the kitchen the visual and functional hub of the home, which suits how many modern households operate from day to day.

  • They can help make a small home feel bigger because there are fewer partitions. Fewer walls also mean more natural light, which adds to the feeling of openness.

  • They allow parents to keep an eye on their kids even while everyone is busy with separate activities.

  • They allow hosts to entertain their guests while working in the kitchen.

To round out the debate, here are some arguments against open-concept floor plans:

  • Because they incorporate fewer walls, open plans afford less countertop and cabinet/shelf space compared to closed kitchens with the same footprint.

  • They require more frequent cleanup because cooking messes are visible from other parts of the home. Dust and clutter are also more easily introduced from adjacent spaces.

  • They offer little privacy or peace and quiet while cooking.

  • They allow cooking smells to spread to other parts of the home.
