Do’s & Don’ts of Planning a Kitchen Layout

A home remodel is a significant investment. That’s why careful consideration must be done before finalizing your kitchen layout. Read on as DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Wilmington shares a few do’s and don’ts when it comes to your layout.

 Do’s

  • Allowing landing space near appliances – Having this designated area is helpful for meal preparation as you’ll have a place to put hot pans and plates when they’re just out of the microwave or oven. The landing space can also serve as a spot to put your ingredients on standby while cooking.
  • Getting more appliances for a larger household – If you have a large family, having two or more of the same appliances can make meal preparation more efficient. For example, having two toasters can make breakfast prep easier, and having two microwaves can eliminate the line when reheating leftovers.
  • Proper storage of cutlery – Knives are essential for meal preparation. However, they can also be dangerous. Keep them out of the reach of children while still easily accessible to you.

Don’ts

Take note of the following errors and make sure to avoid them when creating a layout for your kitchen remodel.

  • Not enough electrical outlets – Having enough electrical outlets for your appliances is crucial. Though extension cords can be used as a temporary fix, having them in your kitchen long-term is unappealing. The best way to avoid this is to install enough outlets from the get-go. Consult a professional electrician regarding the placement of your kitchen outlets.
  • Too many decorations – Having a few decorations in your kitchen is fine but having too many can lead to problems or even accidents. Excessive decorations on your kitchen island and countertops are also a waste of space.
  • Using dark colors – Balancing colors in your kitchen design is necessary to give proper depth and ambiance to your kitchen. Generally, a dark color scheme can make your kitchen feel less inviting and more cramped, which could affect how you look at and evaluate the space during your kitchen layout planning.
