The Do’s & Don’ts of Packing Up Your Kitchen for a Remodel

Packing up before your kitchen remodeling project can be a messy process. Fortunately, there are several ways to make the process more organized. Here are some do’s and don’ts to keep in mind.

Do’s

  • Set aside kitchen essentials. Place essentials such as the coffeemaker, pans, utensils, plates and mugs in one corner. You won’t need to pack these since you’ll be using them in your temporary kitchen.
  • Place items that are occasionally used in your basement or closet. Holiday dinnerware, specialized bakeware and similar items are only used for special occasions, so these should be stored in a closet or your basement.
  • Organize canned goods and bottled sauces into categories. These items can be placed in clearly marked, shallow boxes for easy access and identification. Here’s a tip: sort food items according to the aisles at the grocery store.
  • Place utensils in zippered storage bags. Separate bags should be used for forks, spoons and knives. There’s also the option of using plastic utensils if you don’t have a dedicated sink in your temporary kitchen.
  • Wrap glassware and other fragile kitchenware in boxes lined with bubble wrap. Place extra padding at the top of boxes containing fragile kitchenware to prevent the top of the box from sinking under the weight of other boxes. For extra support, you can also use a box with a double layer of corrugated cardboard. For boxes containing less-fragile items, packing paper should suffice.
  • Declutter. Discard broken kitchenware or appliances and donate items you don’t use to charity. Items that you don’t use just add clutter to a practical space. Every inch of floor space counts inside a kitchen.

Don’ts

  • Don’t empty the contents of drawers and cabinets into one box. It might be tempting to dump all of the things you find in your cabinet into a single box. However, taking the time to sort through these items and placing them in clearly marked boxes will save you the trouble of having to rummage through boxes later on.
  • Don’t leave food in open boxes. Make sure all non-perishables are in airtight containers. Otherwise, they might end up attracting mice or other pests.
