5 Retro Home Trends That Are Making a Comeback

Trends come and go, and sometimes they come back! In this blog, the kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler explore a few trends of yesteryear that are making a comeback.

  1. Globe pendant lights — Globe pendant lighting is a staple of 1960s interior design. While it never really went out of style, more homeowners are again choosing globe pendant lighting. Its simple design goes well with contemporary architecture. Instead of incandescent bulbs, choose warm LED bulbs for long service life and energy savings.
  2. Kitchen appliances that double as accent pieces — Every kitchen nowadays seems to be equipped with stainless steel appliances. Between the 1950s and 1970s, accent appliances were all the rage: think avocado green refrigerators that matched bakelite rotary phones. These accent appliances wouldn’t look out of place in a modern kitchen. You can have your cabinets match these appliances with cabinet refacing.
  3. Wallpaper with bold designs — Wallpaper was considered unfashionable for a good part of the 1990s and 2000s. Today’s wallpapers boast a wider variety of colors and styles. Bold designs with starkly contrasting elements look great in contemporary interior design without looking old-fashioned.
  4. Chrome accents — Chrome accents are making a comeback, thanks in part to 1950s nostalgia: think chrome accents in diners, transistor radios and hood ornaments. Chrome furniture and kitchen hardware look great with any color palette and are easy to keep clean.
  5. Houseplants — Houseplants add pops of color to neutral color palettes. There are many ways to incorporate houseplants into your existing interior design: fill a wall with them, hang them from the ceiling or line window sills with them. Houseplants also contribute to indoor air quality by generating oxygen.
