Interior Design Principles to Keep in Mind

In order to ensure your remodeled spaces will be a pleasant and relaxing environment, there are some basic interior design concepts that you need to take note of. Typically, a good home renovator will suggest the following design principles as you plan your vision for your interior.

The Principles

Harmony

When all design elements go well together and result in a unified look, you have achieved harmony. This design principle generally suggests restfulness as opposed to the excitement that rhythm creates. For example, one effective way to tie together elements that vary in shape, size and texture is to use the same color among all of them.

Balance

Balance means equally distributing visual weight throughout a space. You can accomplish this with any of these types of balance:

  • Symmetrical balance is often used in traditional designs. It utilizes the same objects and arranges them in the same position on either side of a vertical axis.
  • Asymmetrical balance is an appropriate style for modern homes. It uses dissimilar objects that have equal visual weight.
  • Radial symmetry arranges all elements around a center point — for example, a spiral staircase.

Emphasis

Not all details in a room should be given equal importance. Otherwise, the elements of your interior space will seem boring. Select only one point of interest and emphasize that element. Whether it’s a fireplace or a window with a picturesque view, you should make that the center of attention. You can draw eyes to the special feature by arranging furniture or other design elements around it.

Rhythm

Rhythm is the repetition, continuity or organized movement of a particular element. Different kinds of rhythm can be used in your interior, namely:

  • Repetition – The same element is used more than once throughout the space.
  • Progression – Focus is placed on a singular element and then increase or decrease one or more of its qualities (e.g. gradation by color).
  • Transition – Elements are arranged in a way that creates a smoother flow, allowing the eye to effortlessly glide from one area to another.
  • Contrast – The use of two opposite elements (e.g. black and white, smooth and rough).
