A Basic Remodeling Checklist for an Accessible Home

Your needs and routines change as you age, but this doesn’t have to affect your quality of life. In this post, mobility remodeling expert DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler shares some of the essential things that you should include in your remodeling checklist to create an accessible home.

The Bathroom

To make your bathroom safer and easier to use, consider the following changes:

  • Install grab bars in showers and bathtubs. Opt for hand-held showerheads as well as non-slip flooring and seats.
  • Reposition the switches at a height that can be reached by someone who is in a seated position.
  • Turn down the water heater thermostat to avoid accidental scalding.

The Kitchen

Make sure to ask your contractor to include the following features when giving you a kitchen quote:

  • Choose sinks that are not as deep as standard sinks. Check the appropriate sink depth if someone in your household is in a wheelchair.
  • Make sure that the aisles are wide enough to enable those in wheelchairs and walkers to maneuver easily.
  • Faucets with extended handles and spouts are easier to reach and operate with just one hand. For those with limited strength in their hands or without the use of their hands, it’s best to opt for faucets with electronic sensors so that water can be automatically turned on and off.
  • Sliding cabinet doors are ideal for individuals seated in a wheelchair. These are also ideal in making your kitchen more accessible because they require less effort.

Home Exterior

You should also take a look at your exterior to figure out how your outdoor areas can be more accessible. Consider the following when planning for an exterior renovation:

  • Make sure you have an accessible entry and exit point. For instance, your door should be wide enough to accommodate someone in a wheelchair.
  • Install a ramp to enable wheelchair access into your home. Ensure there are handrails on both sides of the ramp.
  • Driveways and walkways should also be wider to allow car doors and sliding doors on passenger vans to be fully opened, with enough space for a wheelchair to maneuver around with ease.
  • Surfaces should have a rough texture to prevent slipping.
