How to Trend-Proof Your Kitchen

There’s nothing wrong with keeping up with the latest kitchen design trends. Keep in mind, however, that they tend to go out of style quickly. To trend-proof your kitchen, we recommend choosing a design that can be easily updated.

Here’s an overview of a timeless kitchen’s core features:

  • Neutral color schemes. Loud, trendy colors can draw attention to kitchen features you want to highlight. But if you want to design a kitchen that is timeless, it’s best to stick to neutral colors which complement a wide variety of colors and never go out of style. And if you want to add a bit more personality to your kitchen? We recommend choosing a versatile color like white, which can provide much-needed visual contrast when paired with bolder shades. Coordinating colors can be tricky, so don’t hesitate to consult a kitchen remodeling contractor if you’re having trouble finalizing a color scheme.
  • Ample storage space. It’s a good idea to install the maximum amount of kitchen cabinets. After all, functionality never goes out of style! For added design flexibility, we recommend transitional kitchen cabinets. They combine the best qualities of traditional cabinets (rustic charm) and contemporary cabinets (clean lines and aesthetics) to create a design that can withstand the test of time. Alternatively, there’s the option of cabinet refacing to update a design.
  • Consistent kitchen accessories. Kitchen accessories might not be the most attention-grabbing feature of a kitchen, but this doesn’t mean they don’t impact kitchen design. Remember: when it comes to kitchen design, consistency is key. Since kitchen accessories can be easily replaced, you have more flexibility when choosing new kitchen faucets, door handles and other fixtures.

Modern Kitchen Trends

Mixed-metal kitchen hardware is a design trend you might want to consider. Installing mixed-metal door knobs, faucets and accessories adds a pop of color to your kitchen design and keeps it from becoming too one-note. Keep in mind that while you have more design flexibility when choosing kitchen hardware and accessories, there are still some rules to follow. For instance, never mix nickel and chrome. There’s also a limit to how many metal finishes you can use in a kitchen. As a rule of thumb, stick to using two: one as the main finish and the other as the accent finish.

To create a timeless kitchen design, there’s also the option of incorporating elements from different styles. However, mixing and matching different elements can be a challenge, which is why it’s best to consult the kitchen remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Tyler.
