Bathroom Layout: What to Do and What Not to Do

Whether you are designing a new bathroom or reimagining an existing one, make sure you prioritize the layout of the space to maximize the room. Bathroom remodel specialists at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of St. Louis Park share some do’s and don’ts to follow when planning your bathroom layout.

Do’s of Bathroom Layout

  • Consider the flooring. In a large bathroom, a change of level can add dimension to the space and sometimes create a center stage for the bathtub. But if your layout entails furnishing around a small bathroom, uninterrupted flooring has a similar effect to wall-mounted furniture. Underfloor heating also frees up wall space for other fixtures.
  • Establish a focal point. Utilizing the awkward corners in a bathroom makes way for some surprising design opportunities. For example, an alcove with a small window in a traditional bathroom can be turned into the perfect corner for a small seat. Contemporary colors such as fern green and dove gray can also spruce up the dated interior.
  • Cater to the negative space. Negative space refers to the space between different elements in a bathroom. As a general rule, there should be a minimum of 10 cm between a vanity unit and a wall and at least a width of 80 cm inside the shower.

Don’ts of Bathroom Layout

  • Confine the storage to the vanity. A vanity that is too clunky can make a bathroom feel small and crowded. To store larger items, bathroom renovation experts recommend incorporating custom cabinetry into the floor plan and making use of the vertical space by adding wall-hung shelves, towel bars, and mirrors and lights.
  • Forget about zones. When the space in your bathroom is plentiful, creating zones can make it inviting instead of uninspired and empty-looking. Generally, you want to divide the room into separate areas for the tub/shower, vanity, and toilet. You do not need a literal wall between these areas but simply a clear, dedicated function for each one.
  • Fail to consider the location of accessories. When you fail to give enough thought to the location of your must-have items, such as towel bars or cabinets, they may end up being positioned out of reach. Planning where the accessories will go also allows you to install enough secure fixing points to keep the items in place.
