5 Small Kitchen Details With a Big Impact

Thoughtful kitchen remodeling is all about the details. They can play a big role in the overall look and functionality of the space. Trusted kitchen remodeler DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of St. Louis Park shares six of these details below.

1. Electrical Outlets

White outlets are a staple in any kitchen, but they can detract from the beauty of a contrasting element like a non-white backsplash. Consider coordinating your outlets and electrical plates with the color of the backsplash tile. However, if you don’t want outlets to be in sight, consider a pop-up outlet that disappears into the countertop.

2. Kitchen Cabinets

Get creative with your kitchen cabinets to maximize storage space. A pull-out cabinet that measures nine to 15 inches wide allows you to check and grab items with ease. If you have a cabinet that’s wider than 15 inches, consider roll-out drawers instead. This way, you can better utilize the space at the back of the cabinet.

3. Kitchen Shelving

In the absence of tall storage, the inside of an upper wall cabinet can be partitioned vertically. This way, you can store trays and other long items on their sides. If there’s more storage space available, consider adding a shelf above these divisions. Adjustable shelves can be placed on the other side if there’s no need for tray storage.

4. Corner Sink

Planning to install the sink in a corner? Make sure it is not adjacent to the dishwasher, especially if you have a tight space. You won’t be able to stand at the sink and load the dishwasher within the small area. One fix for this is to add a small cabinet between the two.

5. Task Lighting

Lighting is an important design element that you and your kitchen contractor should plan for carefully. In addition to ambient lighting, make sure your kitchen has ample under-cabinet task lighting to make food preparation easier on the eyes. Consider installing it toward the front of the cabinet. Otherwise, it will highlight the backsplash instead of the countertop work surface.
