Managing a Home Renovation With Your Kids Around

A home renovation can be especially challenging for households with small kids. Kids are naturally curious, so it’s important to set some ground rules with them before the start of any home improvement project, like designating areas being renovated as off-limits. Aside from setting basic ground rules, what are the ways to keep your kids safe during renovations and minimize disruptions to their daily routine? DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of St. Louis Park, your trusted kitchen and bathroom remodeler, explains more below.

Set Up a Temporary Kitchen

The trick to minimizing stress from disruptions is to maintain some semblance of normality in your family’s daily routine. For instance, if you’re renovating your kitchen, you can set up a kitchenette. Place a mini-fridge, a microwave oven and a crockpot in your garage or an extra room to help keep kids out of areas being renovated. We recommend stocking up on ready-to-eat items such as cold sandwiches and canned soups to save time on cooking.

Create a Fun Dedicated Space for Your Kids

Kids get bored easily. That’s why you need to keep them occupied throughout the renovation. To save yourself the trouble of having to give them constant redirection, designate an area where they can run around and play. Move their toys and maybe add a beanbag chair to keep them entertained and out of trouble.

Vacuum Living Areas Every Day

Your home remodeler will seal off areas under renovation with plastic sheeting and disposable drop cloths to keep dust from spreading. However, even with this precaution in place, dust and other particulates may make their way to other parts of your home. To prevent your kids’ allergies from flaring up, we recommend vacuuming living areas at least twice every day.

Ask for Your Kids’ Input

How can you make a renovation fun for your kids? By asking for their input when choosing small decor items for your home. Letting your kids have a say in the planning process makes them feel invested in your home renovation, which in turn makes them less likely to complain.

Take Into Account Future Needs

During the planning process, it’s important to take into account your kids’ future needs. That’s why we often recommend that customers with young families convert their traditional kitchen into an open kitchen (which can double as a dining area) and expand their living room (to create space for friends and guests your teens may invite over).
