Factors That Affect a Bathroom Remodeling Timeline

On average, a bathroom remodeling timeline lasts about three weeks from start to finish. Your remodeling project may be significantly shorter or longer, depending on many factors. In today’s post, the bathroom remodelers at DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Schaumburg discuss the factors that affect a timeline.

Makeover or Full Remodel?

There are two ways to remodel a bathroom: a makeover or a full remodel. A makeover does not involve demolishing structural components, and often includes only minor changes to the floor plan. Apart from necessary repairs, plumbing is kept as-is. Changes focus on new flooring, lighting fixtures, cabinetry and perhaps a new color palette. In addition to cosmetic changes, makeovers can help address issues such as worn-out fixtures or insufficient lighting. Given the amount of work required, makeovers take less time to complete.

On the other hand, full bathroom renovations require more intensive work. Everything will be new, including floor layout and plumbing. The demolition work alone can take two days, including clearing the debris and preparing the work areas. Preliminary carpentry, new plumbing and electrical lines take up the first week of installation, followed by another week of installing insulation, then hanging and painting new drywall. The remaining time, which may take one or two weeks, will be devoted to tile work, cabinetry and flooring. Fixtures and other finishing touches come in last.

Other Factors That Affect the Timeline

In addition to the types of bathroom remodeling described above, there are other factors that can change a timeline. One of these is the choice of material. Different flooring materials such as porcelain, marble and ceramic have their own installation requirements. The heavier the material, the more time is needed to cut it. The size of each piece also matters. For example, 16-inch tiles take far less time to install compared to inch-wide hexagon tiles.

Complex features can also extend the first weeks of installation. If you want your shower and other fixtures hooked up to smart home controls, this means additional wiring will have to be run. In some cases, a specialist representing the manufacturer or supplier may have to be present to make sure a particular component is installed correctly.

Unplanned repairs can further extend the installation timeline. Parts of the plumbing system may be corroded or leaking, or parts of the wall support may be rotten. Remodeling cannot continue without addressing these issues first. Time may be required to order additional parts. In addition to delays, unplanned repairs will increase the overall bathroom remodeling cost. You can allow some headroom by setting aside an “emergency” budget of 10-20% of the quoted cost.
