Home Remodeling Etiquette: To Tip or Not to Tip?

When you eat at a restaurant or get a haircut, it’s common to give the server or hairdresser a tip of at least 15 percent. But what’s the protocol for tips when you have your home remodeled? In today’s article, home remodeling company DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Schaumburg weighs in on whether you should tip home remodelers.

Unsure? Just Ask

In a survey of 700 homeowners and home improvement professionals, 88 percent of the pros said that while they do not expect to receive a tip, they appreciate it when they do get tipped. The rest of the pros stated that it all depends on how long the project took and whether it was a major job. However, a good rule of thumb is to ask your contractor first if tipping workers is allowed. After all, you don’t want to put the workers in a position where their job security might be compromised.

Keep in mind that you’re already paying for the home improvement services. If you want to show your appreciation for a job well done, you can also do so by giving out gift cards or by writing a letter of appreciation to the company itself, acknowledging any workers who stood out. Better yet, leave a positive online review since most home renovation companies have websites with a review page.

The Bottom Line

Gratuity can come in many forms and can go by many names. For example, you can add an incentive clause in the contract stating that should the project be done earlier than projected (and properly of course) or well below the budget, workers will receive a bonus of $500 to $1,000 to be split amongst themselves. The incentive can also depend on how big the project is.
