How to Incorporate Color Blocking in Your Kitchen

As the name suggests, color blocking is a design technique where you showcase a curated mix of two to three colors that don’t usually go together in shapes to create a striking look. It takes a page from the fashion industry and is especially useful in defining a space when used in kitchen design. If you want to liven up your kitchen by using this technique, here are a few tips to keep in mind.

Color Blocking Techniques

Use Odd Numbers

While there are no hard-and-fast rules to color blocking, there are a few unwritten guidelines that you should follow to pull off the look. One of them is to go with odd numbers. Typically, kitchen designers use two main colors and one neutral color to tie everything together.

You can divide your wall into a few sections using horizontal or vertical rectangles while using architectural breaks such as cabinets and entryways to help define the space. Go with bright, complementary colors if you want your kitchen to be visually striking. If you want something a little more subtle, you can use the same colors in softer hues.

Make Use of Shapes

As mentioned before, you can play with the natural shapes already found within your kitchen, especially the cabinetry. During your kitchen remodel, paint your cabinets one main color and the spaces above and below an accent color. You can then paint the space on either side of your cabinets a third color.

Opt for an Accent Wall

Perhaps you don’t want to go all-out on your kitchen and would like a weekend do-it-yourself project. A simple way to brighten up your kitchen without too much fuss is to paint one wall your favorite color and then choose the same color for your accents to tie the scheme together.

A White Base & Dark Uppers

A black-and-white kitchen will never go out of style. It is elegant, simple and neutral. It doesn’t matter if you are into a modern aesthetic or are leaning towards something more traditional, you simply can’t go wrong with black and white. If you’re not a huge fan of black, you can get the same effect by picking a dark version of your favorite color to accomplish the same effect.
