Home Remodeling Advice You Won’t Hear From Most Contractors

A positive attitude is a great thing to have when remodeling! But the reality is that remodeling isn’t always a walk in the park, especially once you start getting into timelines, permits and kitchen or bathroom cost estimates.

We’re here to share some bits of advice that you might not hear from most contractors. The goal isn’t to discourage you, but to set the record straight about some not-so-fun aspects of remodeling. That way, you can start your project with your eyes wide open and look forward to the things that are really worth getting excited about — like your finished dream home!

1. Expect the Unexpected

At DreamMaker, we follow a tried-and-tested approach to remodeling that’s meant to take as many kinks out of the process as possible. We streamline what can be streamlined, ensure smooth transitions between remodeling phases, and have dedicated points of contact for every stage of the project.

We do all this because we know from experience that unexpected things happen and contingency plans may be needed. Permits may be held up. Materials may arrive late if suppliers run into issues. We may find underlying damage that needs to be addressed first. This is why we emphasize communication with our clients: we want to keep you in the loop regarding your project’s progress, because while it’s our project, we never forget that it’s your home.

2. Remodeling Estimates Aren’t Always Final

All good remodelers will provide a detailed bathroom or kitchen estimate upfront and do their best to follow it to the letter. But trustworthy remodelers will also tell you to plan a buffer budget, just in case. The chances of change orders, hidden damage and scheduling issues affecting the final cost of a project is never zero. This is why transparency and a good reputation are such important qualities to look for in a remodeler. You need to work with a team you can trust with your money 100%.

3. Focus on Quality of Life

Reality shows that focus on houses as investment properties have given some people unrealistic expectations about the impact of remodeling on resale value. While it’s true that some types of remodels have a lot of ROI potential, we believe that it’s best to approach remodeling from a quality of life perspective.

We tell clients that our goal is to turn their house into a home: one that houses their memories, fits their lifestyle and accommodates their needs in every season of life. At the end of the day, that’s where the satisfaction comes from!
