Age-Related Eye Problems to Consider

Even under normal lighting conditions, seniors may experience visual difficulties such as:

  • Reduced contrast sensitivity. Weaker pupil muscles mean it is a bit more difficult for the eyes to transition from well-lit areas to dimly lit areas. It can also be hard to judge between light and dark objects, and the ability to detect surface edges is reduced.
  • Increased sensitivity to glare. Seeing halos and glare is a normal visual response to bright lights. But for seniors, this becomes more intense as the lens of the eye becomes cloudier. Floaters and other eye imperfections also cause more glare, especially from unshaded light bulbs.

Consider installing task lights for reading or other hobbies, along with more ambient lighting. This helps you to see smaller details more clearly. 

One effective way to reduce glare is to use opaque lampshades that disperse light more softly. Also, consider painting the walls and surfaces with a matte finish to reduce light reflection. This can also prevent falls and other age-related accidents. 

Those with eye-related problems can sometimes struggle to adjust their vision when walking into a dark room. To help the eyes adjust to different light level differences easier, consider increasing natural light and adding lighting controls. This can help create smooth lighting transitions between rooms.
