6 Home Office Design Errors to Avoid

If you’re keen on building a home office or remodeling an existing one, you should work with a reputable home renovator to ensure a design that’ll help you stay focused and improve your productivity. In addition, you should avoid these six common errors in home office design.

Common Errors

1. Using Your Bedroom as Your Office

It’s common for professionals to use their bedrooms as their workspace. While this works for some people, others experience  a decline in their sleep quality. If you are having difficulty winding down after a day of work, you should consider setting up your workspace in another part of your home. Perhaps you could convert an unused shed or garage or, if you don’t have a spare room, you can opt to work in your living or dining area instead.

2. Using the Wrong Desk

A good desk should accommodate your computer or laptop as well as other devices or items you need for work without making your space look cluttered. If you have files, books and folders, it’s best not to store them on your desk. Also, your desk should have the right height and a smooth surface. It should blend with the design of your home office.

3. Forgetting to Isolate Your Workspace

If your workspace is not isolated from the rest of your home, you’ll be prone to distractions. Having clear physical boundaries separating your home office will allow you to focus more easily on your work. When it’s time to call it a day, you can leave all work-related stuff there and be able to relax once you step into another room. If you don’t have an actual room for your home office, you can place your desk in a corner with a shelf acting as a wall enclosing your workspace.

4. Having Insufficient Work Storage

Adequate storage helps you to quickly find everything you need. It also lets you pack up easily at the end of the day. If you’re dealing with plenty of paperwork, you can organize your documents on shelves or cabinets and label them for easy identification.

5. Failing to Ensure Proper Lighting

Good lighting encourages work productivity. Natural or artificial lighting that’s too bright can cause migraines and eye strain, while dim light can cause drowsiness and discomfort. You can control the natural light that enters your space by installing shutters and curtains. For artificial lighting, use dimmable lights that can be easily calibrated to your preference.

6. Choosing an Uncomfortable Chair

Finding the right chair ensures you’ll be comfortable throughout your working hours. However, be careful about choosing a chair that’s too comfortable as it might negatively affect your productivity and posture.
