How to Balance Style and Function in Your Kitchen Remodel

A well-designed kitchen should embody a good balance between style and function. This is why every detail has to be carefully planned well before your kitchen remodeler draws a kitchen estimate. In today’s post, DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Northwest DC shares a quick guide to balancing style and function in a kitchen remodel.

Define Your Remodeling Goals

Let’s start with your project’s building blocks. Your goals will, after all, inform every decision related to the project. Why did you want to remodel your kitchen in the first place? Which parts did you want to improve — is the layout restricting your workflow? Does your kitchen need new appliances? Is the kitchen looking dated? Of course, you may have more than one goal for your project — “hard” goals, or goals that must be achieved, and “soft” goals, or goals that are “nice to have” but can be set aside if your budget or timeline doesn’t permit.

Optimize the Kitchen Layout

Every kitchen needs a layout that enables efficiency. When drawing a kitchen quote, your remodeler may refer to the traditional kitchen triangle, where three points — typically the sink, stove and refrigerator — are set equilaterally, enabling efficiency. Keeping in mind your goals, and because no two kitchens are the same, the traditional layout may not necessarily work for you. Think about how you use your kitchen as it is today, take note of what is and isn’t working, and incorporate the ones that do into your kitchen layout.

Fixtures and Materials

This is where you start adding details to your plans, starting with the fixtures. Functional fixtures are essential because you’ll be using them every day. Choose quality brands with ergonomic features and are easy to clean and maintain. The same criteria should also apply when choosing materials for countertops, tiles and backsplashes. Considering that these materials are available in virtually any color and texture imaginable, quality and function should be your first consideration. Once you have these aspects nailed down, additional functions like accessibility, storage and lighting will fall into place easily.
