How To Design A Nautical Bathroom (Without Going Overboard!)

Many homeowners dream of having a nautical-themed bathroom. Designing a space that evokes the feeling of being on the beach or at sea can be an exciting experience. The key to a successful and smooth sailing project is to balance elements without going overboard.

A local bathroom remodeler gives tips to help you achieve a nautical-themed space.

The Basics of Nautical Design

You will feel like you’re at sea with a nautical bathroom. Blue and white colors, striped fabrics, weathered wood accents and seashell or starfish decor are some of the most common elements of this style. Soft blues and grays are also wonderful hues to add to your space. However, avoid adding too many colors to keep the room from looking too busy.

When it comes to accessories and decor, think of simple and eye-catching items like mirrors framed in driftwood or seafaring prints hung on walls. Small details like an anchor-shaped door handle or porthole windows will make all the difference in your space.

Choosing the Right Fixtures

Bathtubs

Consider tubs made out of ceramic tiles with light blue mosaic designs inside. You can also go for something more modern such as an acrylic tub with a dark navy finish.

Showers

Look into traditional brass showerheads with a polished nickel finish. They are cost-effective and can make any bathroom more aesthetically pleasing.

Sinks

You can go old school by choosing vintage-style enamel sinks. They come with metal legs and stoppers, adding a rustic feel to your space. Plus, they’re easy to maintain.

Completing The Look

Decor and Accents

Once all major components have been taken care of, it’s time to move on to the finishing touches. For wall art, use pictures with marine designs. Wallpapers with boat scenes, beach themes or sea creatures are great wall accents.

Flooring

Ask your bathroom contractor about using porcelain tiles in navy blue and white hues for your flooring. They are both attractive and easy to maintain.

Lighting

Good lighting is crucial to the safety and appeal of your bathroom. You can use pendants to highlight your vanity. Meanwhile, you can add ambient illumination through sconces around mirrors.
