A Guide to Lighting for an Aging-in-Place Remodel

When renovating a forever home for aging individuals, it is important to incorporate good-quality light evenly throughout the home. These lighting upgrades will not only enhance the appearance of the space, they can also improve the safety and comfort of your loved ones. In this post, kitchen and bathroom remodel expert DreamMaker Bath & Kitchen of Northwest Arkansas takes a closer look at the types of home lighting that should be used in an aging-in-place renovation.

  • Layered Lighting — This is the combination of ambient light for general illumination, focused lighting for task areas or rooms that you often use and accent lighting to create focal points. Layering your lighting means arranging different types of lighting to produce a well-lit, balanced and functional room.
  • Natural Lighting — Natural lighting creates a warm and inviting ambience. It can be increased by installing large picture and bay windows as well as skylights to let in sunlight. You need to be careful with natural lighting when pursuing a home remodel, however, because it can result in glare. Using non-glossy finishes and textured surfaces can help minimize the adverse effects of natural light.
  • Recessed Lighting — Recessed lighting is installed directly inside a wall, ceiling or other surface. For living areas that only have a single light source, the addition of recessed lighting can significantly boost the atmosphere by diffusing light better. For best results, recessed lights should be evenly spaced about four to six feet apart, and at least 12 to 18 inches from the wall or surface you want to highlight.
  • Reading/Work Lighting — Also referred to as task lighting, this lighting is installed in areas where focus on details is essential. These include kitchen counters, stove areas, kitchen sinks and bathroom sinks. Adjustable lights or reading lamps are also added to typical reading or work areas, like the bedroom, living room, home office and workshop.
